MikroTik Firewall is a powerful security tool that can be used to block unwanted websites. If you are a network administrator, sometimes it may be your requirement to block any website like Facebook, YouTube, Pornographic site and so on. To block these types of websites, you just need to create Firewall Rules that will drop any connection to these websites through your MikroTik Router. MikroTik Firewall basic concept such as what is MikroTik Firewall, what is MikroTik Firewall Rule, how to implement MikroTik Firewall Rule etc.  was discussed in my previous article. If you feel that you need the basic concept of MikroTik Firewall, feel free to spend time to study that article. In this article, I am only going to show how to block unwanted websites using MikroTik Firewall Rules. How MikroTik Firewall Blocks Websites MikroTik Firewall blocks website using Filter Rule. A MikroTik Filter Rule has two parts. Conditional part which takes various conditional properties such as Chain, Source Address, Destination Address, Protocol, Source Port, Destination Port, Layer7 Protocol etc. to match conditions. Action part which takes only drop action to block any website. If conditional part of a Filter Rule is matched, MikroTik Firewall will drop that [...]

MikroTik Blocking Websites with TLS Host Firewall Matcher |   April 29, 2019

Most of the websites now use https and blocking https websites is so much harder with the MikroTik RouterOS version less than 6.41. But from RouterOS v6.41, MikroTik Firewall introduces a new property named TLS Host that is capable to match https websites so easily. So, blocking https websites like Facebook, YouTube etc. can be easily done with MikroTik Router if RouterOS version is greater than 6.41. In my previous article, I discussed how to block websites with MikroTik Router [...]

MikroTik Firewall Basic Concept |   October 6, 2017

MikroTik Firewall functions as a network security tool for preventing unauthorized access to networks as well as provides Network Address Translation functionality. So, a network administrator who is using MikroTik Router in his network cannot go a single day without MikroTik Firewall. Actually, the main duty of a MikroTik administrator is to maintain Firewall properly along with Bandwidth management after completing MikroTik Router basic configuration. So, a MikroTik administrator should have enough knowledge on MikroTik Firewall and so this article [...]

VLAN Routing Configuration between MikroTik RouterOS |   September 27, 2018

VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) is a logical topology that divides a single broadcast domain into multiple broadcast domains. It increases network security and performance as well as improves network efficiency. MikroTik VLAN routing configuration with manageable switch was discussed in previous article. Today we will learn how to configure VLAN between MikroTik RouterOS. This Router to router VLAN (layer3 VLAN) is useful when any ISP provide connection to one or more local ISPs who use MikroTik Router to maintain [...]

MikroTik VLAN Routing Configuration with Manageable Switch |   July 11, 2018

A VLAN (Virtual LAN) is a group of computers, servers, network printers and other network devices that behave as if they were connected to a single network. VLAN is a logical topology that divides a single broadcast domain into multiple broadcast domains. VLAN is a layer 2 method. So, a manageable switch is required to manage VLAN in your network and a router is required to route and control your inter-VLAN. VLAN increases network security and performance as well as [...]

MikroTik EoIP Tunnel for Bridging LANs over the Internet |   April 22, 2018

VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a technology that provides a secure tunnel across a public network. A private network user can send and receive data to any remote private network using VPN Tunnel as if his/her network device was directly connected to that private network. MikroTik provides EoIP (Ethernet over IP) that is used to create a site to site VPN tunnel. EoIP tunneling is a MikroTik RouterOS protocol that creates an Ethernet tunnel between two MikroTik Routers on top [...]

Static Routing Configuration in MikroTik Router |   February 11, 2018

Static Routing is an important topic to any network administrator who works with multiple MikroTik RouterOS and wants to establish communication among Router’s local networks. For example, say a network administrator maintains two MikroTik RouterOS connected with any communication medium and each RouterOS has its own networks and network resources such as servers, printers etc. and he wants that each network and network resources will be accessible from other networks. In this case, static routing configuration between two RouterOS will [...]
