OpenDNS is a DNS based free web content filtering software. It helps to keep our home or office network free from malware, virus and adult content. Configuring OpenDNS in our Home of Office routers, we can easily keep safe our internet content.
OpenDNS provided OpenDNS Family Sheild solution that keeps our kids safe online. OpenDNS Family Shield filters all adult content websites as well as virus and trojan. OpenDNS Family Shield is preconfigured to block adult content. So, our children will have safe while browsing internet content.
MikroTik WiFi Routers are popularly used in home network. So, configuring OpenDNS in MikroTik WiFi Router, we can easily keep safe our home network with OpenDNS Family Shield.
OpenDNS Family Shield can easily be configured in MikroTik WiFi Router following the below steps.
- Getting OpenDNS Family Shield DNS Server IP from OpenDNS.
- Assigning OpenDNS Family Sheild IPs in MikroTik DHCP Networks.
Step 1: Getting OpenDNS Family Shield DNS Server IPs from OpenDNS
OpenDNS provides two free nameservers IPs for OpenDNS Family Shield. Those two servers are responsible to filter unwanted websites for keeping our kids or family members safe online. To get those two nameservers IPs from OpenDNS website, follow the following steps.
- Go to OpenDNS official website [www.opendns.com] and then click on CONSUMER menu item.
- From the Consumer page, scroll down and find OpenDNS Family Shield
- Click on SETUP GUIDE button.
- In the landing page, we will easily get two nameservers IPs [67.222.123 and 208.67.220.123] those are used for OpenDNS Family Shield.
Keep in mind these two IPs because we will setup these two nameserver IPs in our MikroTik DHCP Server used in our home network.
Step 2: Assigning OpenDNS Family Sheild IPs in MikroTik DHCP Networks
From the previous steps, we have got OpenDNS Family Shield DNS Server IPs. We will now assign these DNS Server IPs in our DHCP Server Network because DHCP Server is usually used to assign IP address and DNS Servers in any home device. So, it is assumed that we are also using MikroTik DHCP Server in our home network.
To assign OpenDNS Family Shield IPs in MikroTik DHCP Network, follow the following steps.
- Login in to MikroTik RouterOS using Winbox.
- Go to IP > DHCP Server menu item. DHCP Server window will appear.
- Click on Networks tab. All available networks will be listed here.
- Click on a Network and assign OpenDNS Family Shield IPs in DNS Servers input box.
- Click Apply and Ok button.
- Similarly assign OpenDNS Family Shield IPs all other networks if you have.
So, whenever a device will be connected to MikroTik DHCP Server, OpenDNS Family Shield IPs will be assigned as DNS Server of the device. As the device will use OpenDNS Family Shield Nameserver IP, any unwanted content will be blocked by OpenDNS and your home network will keep safe from adult content.
