  • MikroTik CAPsMAN and CAP Basic Configuration using Winbox

MikroTik CAPsMAN (Controlled Access Point system Manager) is a centralized Access Point management application provided by MikroTik.  MikroTik introduces CAPsMAN from RouterOS v6.11 with CAPsMAN v1 and from RouterOS v6.22rc7 CAPsMAN v2 is running. If you have multiple MikroTik CAPs (Controlled Access Point) in your organization, CAPsMAN provides an easy way to maintain client data as well as CAPs configuration centrally. In my previous article, I discussed how to configure MikroTik Wireless Router as an Access Point. In this article, I will discuss how to do configure MikroTik CAPsMAN basic configuration with a Controlled Access Point (CAP). Network Diagram  For a simple MikroTik CAPsMAN configuration, I am following the below network diagram. In this network diagram, MikroTik RouterBOARD 1100 AHX2 is working as a CAPsMAN but it is not a wireless router because CAPsMAN does not require being a wireless router but require a powerful hardware that can control multiple CAPs and client data. Another MikroTik Wireless Router (RB941-2nd) is working as a CAP which will be controlled by the CAPsMAN. After configuring CAPsMAN, SSID (MikroTik CAP) will be shown by the CAP and client will be able to connect providing valid password. MikroTik CAPsMAN Configuration with CAP Wireless Router [...]

CAPsMAN Channel Planning with Non-Overlapping Frequency |   March 16, 2020

MikroTik CAPsMAN is an excellent application for managing multiple CAPs (Controlled Access Point) in a Wireless Network. But multiple APs create frequency overlapping issue if channels are not configured properly. Channel overlapping is required for smooth connection while roaming but there should not be frequency overlapping because frequency overlapping makes wireless performance so poor. In my previous article, I discussed MikroTik CAPsMAN basic configuration with default channel configuration. In this article, I will discuss how to configure CAPsMAN channel to [...]

MikroTik WiFi Frequency Band and Channel Width Explanation |   January 10, 2020

MikroTik WiFi frequency, band and channel width tuning is an important task in any wireless network. If we fail to setup WiFi frequency and channel width parameter properly, we will notice a poor performance of wireless network. WiFi is aimed at use within unlicensed spectrum and the unlicensed spectrum that is usually used for WiFi is 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz band.  2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands have multiple channels and these channels must be setup properly to get [...]

How to Install Extra Packages in MikroTik RouterOS |   October 10, 2019

MikroTik RouterOS does not always include all the packages those are developed by MikroTik team. So, sometimes you may find that some packages are missing in your RouterOS such as NTP package, DUDE package, Wireless package, CAPsMAN package and so on. Specially, user manager package which is totally a separate MikroTik RADIUS package used to manage user authentication, authorization and accounting is always missing. Also upgrading RouterOS or downgrading RouterOS you may find that some packages are missing there. So, [...]

MikroTik Router Static DHCP Server Configuration |   October 25, 2015

DHCP Server assigns IP address and other related IP information (Subnet mask, Gateway and DNS) automatically to network devices. But automatic DHCP Server has some disadvantages too. If any IP device connects to any automatic DHCP network, the device will get an IP address and related IP information automatically by the DHCP Server and the device will start to use resources of this network. In this situation, the network administrator cannot know who is being connected to the network and [...]

Static Routing Configuration in MikroTik Router |   February 11, 2018

Static Routing is an important topic to any network administrator who works with multiple MikroTik RouterOS and wants to establish communication among Router’s local networks. For example, say a network administrator maintains two MikroTik RouterOS connected with any communication medium and each RouterOS has its own networks and network resources such as servers, printers etc. and he wants that each network and network resources will be accessible from other networks. In this case, static routing configuration between two RouterOS will [...]

How to Create Free SSL/TLS Certificate with OpenSSL |   July 23, 2021

SSL/TLS certificate is required to encrypt data sent over internet communication. Without encryption, the sent data can be hacked by the middle man attack. SSL/TLS certificate is usually a pair key, public key and private key, solution where data is encrypted with public key and decrypted with private key. In public communication, public key is required to be signed by a CA (certificate authority) but in private communication, there is no need to be signed by any CA. If we [...]

MikroTik User Management (RouterOS User) |   October 22, 2017

MikroTik User Management plays an important role in MikroTik system administration as well as MikroTik security. Don’t be confused the title User Management with the MikroTik UserManager. UserManager is an optional and totally separate package distributed by MikroTik. UserManager is an implementation of Radius server that is used to maintain not only RouterOS users but also PPPoE, PPTP, Hotspot, Wireless and DHCP users. In my few future articles, I will discuss how to maintain these users with MikroTik UserManager Radius [...]
